Despite fracking’s climb to fame, it has not been without controversy. Most notably, these controversies have surrounded water contamination and earthquakes. Though “the jury is still out” on the whether or not fracking is actually to blame for increased seismic activities and water issues, preliminary data does show at least some correlation (Nersesian, 2016). You will learn more about fracking in this week’s discussion forum.
Natural gas can be utilized to generate electricity in a number of ways. In a more traditional design, it is used as a heat source for converting water into steam. Steam is then used to spin a turbine. This rotational force is transferred to a generator for purposes of producing electricity. However, natural gas can also be used in a simpler and more direct way. allowing for quick start-ups and making it ideal for periods when the demand for electricity is high.
