Thesis: In order to inform you about the Chicano Theater, I will discuss how the Chicano
Theater started, how it evolved over time, and what influences and changes it made in recent years.
Introduction
A famous quote from Luis Valdez is, It’s absolutely essential for every generation to capture social responsibility. Injustice grows like weeds. The injustices of the world are like weeds, and
if you do nothing they’ll choke your whole garden. Every day we face social injustices such a discrimination everywhere in the world. It has happened to many, but the group I will focus on
today is the Chicano community. Many Chicanos fought in many ways to express the injustices they suffered. One of those ways is through a form of art called theater. Good morning everyone,
today I will inform you about the Chicano Theater. In order to inform you about the Chicano Theater, I will discuss how the Chicano Theater started, how it evolved over time, and what
influences and changes it made in recent years.
(Transition: To begin, in order to inform you about the Chicano Theater, I will discuss how such theater started.)
I. The Chicano Theater, also known as El Teatro Campesino, was founded by Luis Valdez in the 1960s with the purpose to help Chicano activists such as Cesar Chavez express the social
injustices during the Chicano Movement.
A. Luis Valdez wanted to help Cesar Chavez with the injustices the farm workers had such as their working conditions, low paying rates, etc. by using his knowledge of
theater.
1. The theater started with acts taken directly from experiences of the audience and performed directly by the farmers who suffered the social injustices.
a. According, to an interview with Luis Valdez by Carl Heyward, Valdez states that he wanted to give the farmworkers a way to express themselves and how they felt about their injustices through theater.
B. The Chicano Theater started with simple acts of comedy and satire performed under tents that were poorly assemble because the goal the theater wanted to achieve was for
the audience focus and see the social injustices in the Chicano community.
1. Many actors performed acts that resemble real life scenarios where they were poorly and unfairly treated by the employers.
2. Luis Valdez allowed the actors to feel free to act how they pleased in order to express their own experiences, which means that almost all the acts were unscripted.
C. The Chicano Theater began to make the simple acts not only in the United States but also in Mexico and many parts of Europe.

Many people around the parts of the world started to see the beauty the Chicano Theater brought as a form of entertainment but also got to see the message of the social injustices in the Chicano community. (Transition: Second, in order to inform you about the Chicano Theater, I will discuss how it has evolved over time.)
II. As time passed by, the Chicano Theater became bigger and bigger, moving out of the simple
acts in tents, to plays performed in bigger forms like theaters, television, and film.
A. The Chicano Theater evolved tremendously and began to make bigger plays and acts
that were often played in bigger platforms around the world.
1. Around the 1970s, the Chicano Theater company began to make bigger plays
that were perform in bigger theaters and platforms around part of Europe, Mexico
and the United States.
2. In 1978, the Chicano Theater recreated one of the most successful plays in
Los Angeles called Zoot Suit.
a. According to El Teatro Campesino.com, the play Zoot Suit
became the first play by a Latino to presented on Broadway and received
Golden Globe Award nomination for best musical picture.
b. The play Zoot Suit was very important to the Chicano Theater
because it allowed for many Chicanos to show that they could also be part
of something bigger and better like theater.
c. The music performed in this big play was written by Chicano artists
that became well known after this play.
d. The play allowed many people in the audience to see how sometimes
minorities are treated unfairly in the justice system just because of how
they look, how they dress, and simply just because they are Latino or
people of different color.
B. In1981, The Chicano Theater company moved in and got a bigger warehouse where
they were going to be able to perform bigger acts, plays, and productions with music,
dance, and theater.
1. Luis Valdez wrote and directed La Bamba, a movie about the story about
the famous Chicano Singer Ritchie Valens, for Columbia pictures in 1987.
a. The movie became a big hit and received many good reviews around
the United States.
b. La Bamba allowed for many to see the great work, great tradition,
and the great performance of many Latinos.
C. One of biggest accomplishments of the Chicano Theater is being able to perform their
theater creations through television.
1. Being able to play their performances on television allowed for the Chicano
Theater to show a bigger audience the great performances of the Chicano
community but still with the same goal of showing the audience to see the social
problems Chicanos face.
2. Some of the greatest plays that were televised by broadcasting stations such as
PBS were Los Vendidos, Corridos, La Pastolera etc.
a. Many of these plays, for instance Los Vendidos, were created to
entertain the audience with the use of satire and comedy but at the same
time showing the problems Chicanos face in society.
i. The play shows the many different harsh ways the Anglo
society stereotypes Latinos in the United States with stereotypes
like being called farmers, gangsters, Indians, etc.
b. These plays allowed the audience to see that Latinos can also be great
actors and be very successful as any other person in the United States.
3. With television, the Chicano Theater gave many Latinos the idea that they can
all be successful and accomplish their dreams through theater arts or any other
form of art.
(Transition: Third, in order to inform you about the Chicano Theater, I will discuss the changes
and influences it has made in recent years.)
III. The Chicano Theater has made many positive influences in order to help many minority
groups to come out and fight against many of the social injustices society has.
A. Luis Valdez has the idea that the Chicano Theater serves as a tool for not only
Chicanos but for all minorities to use to take a stand for social inequalities.
1. According to the article, The legacy of Luis Valdez and the Chicano Theater,
the theater has allowed for many Latinos and Latinas to see that they can be great
performers and seek acting and theater.
2. Many women in the Latino community did not have equality and were often
seen only as people who should stay home and take care of the household.
3. After many Latinas started to see how great and crucial some of their roles
were not only in the Chicano Theater but also in many of the films produced, they
started to seek and demand equality in all aspects of society.
a. Many more women started to seek crucial roles in films and shows.
b. Latinas started to strive by becoming great actors, seek film
productions and with music.
B. The Chicano Theater created its own multimedia digital center in order to create more
films and reach more audiences around the world.
1. Luis Valdez wants to keep creating films, acts, and plays that reflects many of
the cultural values of many minorities around the world.
2. The Chicano Theater serves for the community because it will be keep
growing with acts to fight against any social injustices and show the beauty of a
multi-cultural country that is the United States.
C. The Chicano theater made big influences around the world, especially when it comes
to Hollywood film.
1. Many women and men in the Latino community have made big influences in
film since the birth of the Chicano Theater.
2. Many have made big impacts and have made it to the Hollywood films such
as Anthony Quinn, Michael Pena, etc.
3. The Chicano Theater serves as an influence for minorities to fight for equality
and seek success in Hollywood.
a. According to the article previously mentioned, the theater inspired
many Latinos and Latinas to have a sense of pride of who they are and to
keep that pride as they work towards success in their futures.
Conclusion
In conclusion, now that I informed you about how the Chicano Theater started, how it evolved
over time, and the changes and influences it has made in recent years, you got to more about the
Chicano Theater. Going back to the quote by Luiz Valdez, it is our job to fight against social
injustices so that we can live with peace and happiness for the current generations and future
generation. The Chicano Theater served as a tool of expression for Latinos to seek equality in the
United States but now that we are in the present, we need to fight to keep the same ideology of
living together in peace and with equality for all, no matter where they come from or who
they are as a person. We are all humans.
