Monitoring childhood development is an important role for parents and social workers in different ways. One way this may be done is through play. Play is a vital role in the development of children’s motor, problem-solving, and communication skills (Hutchison, 2019). In early childhood, play is a way for children to make sense of their lives through using a lot of imaginative play which is seen as symbolic for the world around them (Hutchison, 2019). As children get older, they advance to play that focuses more on developing fine motor skills such as coloring or board games (Hutchison, 2019). Throughout this timeline, social workers must be adept at figuring out how to encourage play to develop children’s moral, emotional, and social development. Roleplaying has a big part in fostering growth in these areas. When children can ‘act’ like someone else in a situation, they are able to learn about how to resolve conflict and learn right from wrong (Hutchison, 2019). This moral and emotional development is found across multiple cultures and groups (Hutchison, 2019). However, it is important to note that social development is different among ethnic groups as ‘play’ for white middle-class children is less direct than African American or Italian groups (Hutchison, 2019). This small example goes to show how play may differ across cultures and religions.

The role of play in early childhood is not only important, but necessary for emotional growth, motor skills, and cognitive functions. Playing allows children to learn to relate to others, helps in conflict resolution, and promotes self-confidence (Hutchison, 2019). The game, in this age group, can be encouraged through parental interaction to promote a secure bond with the child through fun activities. Parents also have access to community resources that encourage play, such as playgrounds, day care centers, Headstart programs, and interactive children’s museums.
Role playing is important for young children as they learn to imitate actions and behaviors that develop in their character as individuals (Hutchison, 2019). Moral development is positively affected when children participate in role-playing in Sunday school. They are taught the importance of good decisions as they learn to imitate Christ with their actions, which strengthens their moral compass. In addition, emotional development through role-play helps the child learn to express and understand the reason for different emotions and helps the child connect the dots between actual circumstances and the correct emotional response. In terms of social development, role play is enhanced by allowing children to make connections with others their own age and establish friendships. This relationship helps them learn to share, cooperate, communicate, and show empathy with their peers.
