DISCUSSION ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS
Overview:
The student will post one thread of at least 300 words.
Instructions:
1. For each thread, students must demonstrate course-related knowledge and support assertions
with at least 2 scholarly citations in APA format. Acceptable sources include the class textbook
and/or peer-reviewed articles from within the last five years.
2. Based on the assignment instructions, some threads will require additional support such as
scripture references, reference to online sources, and/or reference to course videos.
3. Citations are not required for reply posts but are highly encouraged.
Our first forum will be answered in two parts. Make sure that you reference the class textbook at least two times within your thread to support your thoughts.
Part I:
As you start out your thread, you will discuss why the human service field is a very necessary profession. What is the primary purpose of this profession? Briefly share a career or two that you find to be interesting.
Part II:
In the second portion of your thread, you will focus on the history of the human service field. In the Martin textbook, we will look at some of the more critical events. Each of these events made an impact on how human service workers currently serve in our country. Remember that an event can be positive and/or may have had a negative impact in some ways as well. Make sure to focus on one of the events in our class textbook and why you think that this event was important to the development of this field.
Discussion Thread Module 1: Human Services Profession and History
Part 1: Chapter one of the course textbook discusses what makes the human service field distinct from other fields, such as social work and counseling psychology. For the first part of your thread, discuss why the human service field is a much-needed profession and share one or two possible careers that you might be interested in pursuing. Remember that the Human Service degree is designed to prepare individuals with the necessary skills to participate in agency-related activities (community care, court, agency, etc.) and does not fulfill licensure requirements. Students planning to apply for state licensure should contact their academic advisor for information on degree programs designed to fulfill state licensure requirements.
Part 2: Based on your study of the Learn materials for this Module: Week, what do you consider the most important historical event in the history of the human services profession? Why? While you are sharing your opinion here, you must demonstrate informed opinion by supporting your points with references to the course textbook.
