Assignment
The following video contains effective tools we can use in persuasion and are very beneficial in writing the solution section of your persuasion speeches. Watch the following video on the six “shortcuts” of persuasion. Choose two of these shortcuts, and write a paragraph each (two total) on how you could frame your persuasion topic (any part of it) using these two tools. Make sure your persuasion topic is clear so that others in the class will understand your reasoning. Finally, choose two of your classmates’ posts, and for each, use one of the shortcuts they didn’t use to help them craft an alternative argument (two responses total).
Use your actual persuasion topic for this assignment
Example
Let’s say my speech is, “We should limit the use of fossil fuels.”
Using the principle of scarcity, I would write a paragraph on how clean air is in hard to come by these days, and it’s not long before there’s no clean air left. (Notice, I wouldn’t write that we’re almost out of fossil fuels, because according to the principle of scarcity people would actually want to consume fossil fuels even more!)
Using the principle of consistency, I would write a paragraph on how we don’t need to start big; We just need to ride our bikes and use public transportation once a week to start. After 6 months, increase it to twice a week, and so on.
Since I wrote these two as my response, another student can respond to my topic by suggesting that I use the reciprocity principle while explaining her/his reasoning. This student wouldn’t be able to respond using the principles of scarcity or consistency because I already used them in my response.
