communication problem that is interesting to you

communication problem that is interesting to you

READ INSTRUCTIONS, ITS HELPING YOU.
This is a short (2-paragraph) essay
Be precise in selecting the problem you want to explore.  Rather than exploring general tendencies of communication or something hypothetical, focus on some sort of actual communication problem that is happening to real people, right now.  The more precise you are in selecting a specific problem to address, the better your work will be.
Please go beyond identifying “miscommunication” as a communication problem. You need to go deeper than this. Sometimes misunderstanding leads to communication problems, but a simple misunderstanding, on its own really ins’t an issue. For example, identifying something like “people from different  cultures sometimes miscommunicate” will NOT work. But it could be a starting point. WHO from WHAT cultural system is interpreting WHAT communication about WHAT differently than WHOM from WHAT cultural system, with WHAT effect or outcome? Answer those sorts of questions and you will be one step closer to a workable topic.
You may choose any communication problem that is interesting to you.  You may wish to begin by selecting a context.  The problem you address may be in the interpersonal, small group, organizational, intercultural, public address, mass media, or other context.  For example, rather than just focusing on “interpersonal relationships,” you would want to get more focused on a particular type of relationship (Sibling relationships? Parent-child relationships? Co-worker relationships? Same gender friendships between grade school students? Romantic relationships? Something else?). And if you are looking at romantic relationships for example, you could narrow that down even more (Dating? Long-term committed relationships of more than 5 years? Long-distance? Long distance relationships between high school students who have gone to different colleges? Long distance relationships between committed partners how have been together for more than 10 years where one partner has moved to a different state for the purpose of professional advancement? Something else?). And these are just a few examples of how to get more specific about context.
Next, you will want to get more specific about the problem itself – the negative effect that occurs in that communication context. For this type of project, students have addressed problems including: degraded self-esteem among at-risk youth exiting the juvenile justice system; HIV and AIDS education that does not effectively speak to minority populations; bungled public relations communication following Wells Fargo’s fake accounts scandal; ineffectiveness of a  stop-smoking campaigns; problematic patterns of argument among freshman roommates and the impact of that dysfunctional conflict on academic achievement; the effects of the loss of one partner’s job on the relationship and communication of couples in long-term committed romantic relationships; landlord-tenant disputes that have reached an impasse.  Really, you can see that the possibilities are endless.  Just make sure that the problem you select is sufficiently focused on the communication in these situations.
CONTENT AND ORGANIZATION
In the first paragraph of this essay, I strongly suggest that you use the following format and include the following content:
Give a one-sentence statement of the problem as the topic sentence of this paragraph (this is the effect), making sure that it also clearly specifies a narrow context
Develop cited evidence of inherency (the source of the problem) in the next several sentences.
Finally, develop the remainder of the paragraph by giving some proof of significance, by citing some sources that give evidence of the harm caused by this problem and citing evidence of the extent of the problem and harm.
