Writing Assignment 1: The Primary Debates

Directions: Please watch ONE presidential debate that will air at 5:00 PM

PST on February 7 or at Time TBD on February 19. The debate on

February 7 will air on ABC, Apple News, and Youtube. I will announce

how you can watch the February 19 debate live in a future class. You are

encouraged to watch the debate either live or at your convenience. I will

also upload a full video of the debates once I see it on Youtube and post

it to the course blackboard.

Writing Prompt: In an essay of about 900 words (no more than 1000),

please identify several of the key issues that the candidates discussed.

What were some areas of disagreement and some areas of agreement?

Discuss at least three policy issues. Lastly, discuss the performance of the

candidate that you thought did best. Provide an analysis of why you

thought that candidate did well using concrete evidence from the debate.

Writing Tips: Aside from addressing all aspects of the prompt, your essay

should have a clear introduction and conclusion paragraph. The

introduction paragraph should set up the main body of the essay, while

the conclusion should summarize the main points that you made. Each

body paragraph should have a clear topic sentence.
