Find a roll of Scotch tape. Tear off a piece of tape a few inches long, and fold over a tab on one side. Press the tape firmly onto a surface such as a table. If you rapidly peel the tape off, notice it becomes charged, which you can check. Here is a demonstration: http://scidiv.bellevuecollege.edu/physics/hobbs/P122ho bbs/TapeBasicsAll.mov
Now press the tape back onto the surface, and cover it with another tape prepared the same way. Peel both tapes off the surface as a unit, discharge them, and then separate them rapidly. They should each be charged, which you can check. They are also attracted to each other. Here is a demonstration: http://scidiv.bellevuecolleqe.edu/phvsics/hobbs/P122ho bbs/Top-Bottom-Tapes-Make.mov
Create a total of two sets of top and bottom tapes prepared the same way. I suggest you label them as you go. Investigate the interactions between all combinations of top and bottom tapes (TT, TB, and BB.)
Take the “top” and “bottom” tapes as being the standards for the two kinds of charge. Test your charged objects from part 1 against the tapes – which objects have the same kind of charge as the “top” tape, and which have the same kind as the “bottom” tape? Do any seem like they might not be charged after all?
